During the online lecture Dr. Omar Hisham Altalib will talk about:
– Islam is a religion that preaches excellence and improvement.
– Reform is an essential element of Islam.
– There have been many reformers in Islamic history. In modern times some of the most prominent Muslims reformers include: Dr. Ismail Raji al-Faruqi and his wife Lois Lamya al-Faruqi, Dr. Taha Alalwani, Dr. Abdulhamid Abusulayman. These reformers have engaged in a variety of efforts to improve the Muslim ummah, including: Islamization of knowledge.
– Correcting the errors in the interpretation of the Quran and of the Hadith.
– Establishing organizations that publish books containing the best ideas in the ummah.
In order to understand the role of reform in Islam, it is very important to understand the efforts of these reformers and their degrees of success and failure in reforming the Islamic world.
Biography of a lecturer:
Dr. Omar Hisham Altalib is an American academic who is originally from Mosul, Iraq, an instructor with the Institute of Knowledge Integration, Tbilisi, Georgia. He teaches Sociology of Religion and Culture, Anthropology of Islam, Islam & Gender Issues, and Ijtihad.
Dr. Omar is a member of the Board of Directors of the Minaret of Freedom Institute in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. Dr. Omar is an international consultant and provides translation and training programs worldwide through his own company, Altalib Associates.
Dr. Omar obtained his PhD in Sociology from the University of Chicago, Chicago, Illinois, USA in 2004. He was Assistant Professor of Sociology in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the International Islamic University in Malaysia from 2009 to 2011. He served as Advisor to the Iraqi Minister of Education from 2003 to 2004. During that period, he assisted the Iraqi government with curriculum reform, teacher training, student retention and Ministry reorganization.
Dr. Omar speaks Arabic, English and Indonesian.
Dr. Omar has co-published the following books:
– Parent Child Relations: A Guide to Raising Children (2013)
– Sex and Sex Education (2014)
– [In Arabic] Applied Methodological Vision in Parenting (2019)
