Prof Dr Elmira Akhmetova

Elmira Akhmetova, PhD, a Tatar scholar from Russia, is Senior Research Fellow at the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies (FRIAS), the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg, Germany, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow (award category of Experienced Researcher, 2021-2023). She also serves as an instructor at the Institute of Knowledge Integration (IKI) Academy, Georgia. Akhmetova was previously employed in the position of Director for Academic Affairs, IKI Academy (2021-2022); Department of History and Civilization at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM; 2015-2021); Adjunct Associate Professor at University of South Australia (2018-2021); a Research Fellow at International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia (2013-2016); and a lecturer at the Kazan State University (1996-1997) in Russia. She obtained her PhD from IIUM in 2014, where she did research on Pan-Islamism in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. Akhmetova is the author and editor of several books and has more than seventy research articles and book chapters in the areas of tafsir and Qur’anic Studies, Islam in Russia, Islamic political thought, diplomacy in Islam, Islamic civilization and history, and presented more than 90 papers at international conferences worldwide. She annually prepares reports on Islam in Russia for the prominent Brill Publications volume of Yearbook of Muslims in Europe since 2009. She also serves as Associate Editor of Brill Journal of Muslims in Europe.
